10月16日，由于美国9月零售数据远低预期，加上贸易对峙将持续拖累全球经济增长前景，市场担忧情绪仍在，金价由跌转升并创日内新高。美元指数创新四周低位后仍保持上升，英国有序脱欧一波三折，英镑兑美元成过山车走势。
美国9月零售销售月率意外大幅收缩0.30%，前值和预期值分别为扩张0.60%和扩张0.30%；美国9月核心零售销售月率意外录得-0.10%，为7个月来首次下滑，前值和预期值均为0.20%。
美国商务部表示，市场担忧制造业将导致经济疲软，而数据可能会推升对影响范围将蔓延至全美国的担忧，从而施压美联储本月继续降息。随着消费者支出放缓、贸易不确定性仍存、无序脱欧阴云未散，经济学家预计美联储将在10月降息来维持经济扩张。
过去15个月以来持续的关税冲突中，已经迫使多国央行开始降息，因全球经济增长预期已经转弱。这样的紧张情势尚未出现明显、且不可逆缓解的迹象，黄金多空对峙近来加剧。
英镑兑美元盘中一度暴跌近130点至1.2657，日内最大跌幅近1%。有报道称，英国脱欧谈判存在破裂风险，因北爱尔兰民主统一党抵制。欧盟方面也称，除非英国让步，否则不可能达成脱欧协议。
英国脱欧事务大臣巴克利此前称，政府将按法律要求在达不成协议的情况下寻求延迟脱欧。绝大部分的受访分析师也预计，英国10月31日的脱欧日期将被推迟，双方最终将达成自由贸易协议，无协议脱欧概率已经下降。
英国首相约翰逊承诺，无论有无脱欧协议，都将带领英国在10月31日脱欧。约翰逊是2016年英国脱欧公投中的“脱欧派”主将之一。
分析师表示：“制造业活动及全球贸易急剧恶化造成经济增长疲弱，更高的关税和长期的贸易政策不确定性损伤投资和资本财需求。决策者必须以经久耐用的协议来扫除贸易壁垒、遏制地缘政治紧张情势，并降低国内政策不确定性，方能重振经济增长。”
中国外交部上日称，今年以来中方向美方购买了70万吨猪肉。但美国农业部公布的最新数据与中方提供的存在约25万吨的差距，美方数据显示中方购买的猪肉数量大约为43.5万吨。
