正如市场预期，新西兰联储于北京时间周四(9月10日)宣布下调指标利率25个基点至2.75%，并表示看来可能需要进一步放宽政策，以提振放缓的经济增速。
此次下调后，新西兰利率仍高于其他主要国家利率。美国利率为0-0.25%，日本利率为0-0.1%，欧元区利率为0.05%， 澳洲利率为2%。
新西兰联储表示，看来可能进一步放宽政策；纽元进一步下跌是合适的。
新西兰联储预计，今年年底通胀年率为0.5%(之前预估为0.7%)，明年年底为2.2%(之前预估为2.1%)；预计截至明年3月的GDP年度增幅为2.1%(之前预估为3.2%)，截至2017年3月的GDP年度增幅为2.5%(之前预估为3.1%)。
新西兰联储指出，预计明年新西兰元贸易加权指数降至约0.65。
新西兰联储还表示，利率下降和新西兰元走软支撑经济成长；全球经济进一步疲弱可能需要央行出台较目前预估更多的宽松政策。
新西兰联储主席惠勒表示，中国戏剧性地放缓，这和重大的厄尔尼诺现象恐怕都会对新西兰经济造成重大影响。2014年加息没有错；若有需要，还可进一步降息。如果局势恶化的程度超乎想象，新西兰联储未来宽松的空间巨大。此外，惠勒还表示对人民币贬值感到担忧。
新西兰联储宣布降息之后，纽元跌破伦敦汇市隔夜低点0.6357，兑美元下跌逾100点，并刷新日低至0.6280。
