美国商务部周二(8月18日)一份政府报告显示，美国7月份新屋开工数升至近八年来最高水平，表明该行业将在下半年加快。
数据显示，7月份新屋开工月率增长0.2%，折合年率为121万套，为2007年10月份以来最高水平，前月为120万套，高于初报值。
路透社评论称，美国7月新屋开工数据刷新了八年高点，表现好于预期，主要原因是独户住宅建设量增长12.8%，触及2007年12月来最高水平，房屋市场受到就业市场逐步稳健及较低抵押贷款利率的提振，建筑商大幅增加独立住宅房屋的建造，表明美国经济正在不断回暖。
数据发布之后，高盛表示，因美国新屋开工数据强劲将美国第三季度GDP从2.2%上调至2.4%。巴克莱则将美国第三季度GDP预期从2.6%上调至2.7%。美国亚特兰大GDPNOW模型将美国第三季度GDP预期由增长0.7%上调至增长1.3%。
数据发布之后，美元短线飙升至97.06；现货黄金扩大跌幅，并刷新1109美元/盎司日低；现货白银则大跌近3%，并刷新14.70美元/盎司的逾一周低位。不过，之后金银走势出现分化，黄金跳水后迅速拉升，尾盘微幅收涨，但白银则在日低附近徘徊，收盘下跌2.8%。
