周日为打破希腊与其国际债权人之间僵局的谈判无果而终，欧洲领导人对希腊顽固的态度大为不满，该国正一步步滑向债务违约，危及它在欧元区中的前途。
欧盟官员周末把谈判破裂的责任推到希腊头上，声称该国没有提出任何新东西以获得所需资金。但希腊方面反驳称，仍愿意谈判，但欧盟与IMF官员称未授权继续谈判。希腊政府坚称，绝不会对进一步削减养老金与薪资的要求让步。
一名接近谈判的人士表示，“这非常令人失望和沮丧。这是弥合我们分歧的最后努力，但分歧太大了。可以讨论分歧，但这个分歧宽如海洋。”
在进行上述所谓的“最后努力”之后，欧盟执委会表示，欧元区财长将在本周四(6月18日)开会时讨论这个问题。然而，达成技术性协议的可能性不大，成员国财长们可能不得不针对希腊在欧元区的成员国地位作出政治性决定。
眼下希腊正急需资金，帮助其在本月底前偿还国际货币基金组织(IMF)的16亿欧元。
希腊若是无力偿还IMF贷款，将会造成深远的影响。欧洲央行或许必须暂停支撑希腊银行业的紧急放款。焦躁不安的储户已大举从希腊各银行提领存款。
