据IMF(国际货币基金组织)近期公布的数据显示，黄金的价值储备地位依旧稳定，近段时期以来，新兴市场等多国央行均在增加黄金储备。专家指出，与其他国家相比，中国黄金储备占外汇比例偏低，增持黄金有利于增强投资者的信心，提高人民币在国际上的信任度，能促进人民币国际化。
IMF近期公布各国2月份黄金储备变动情况显示，哈萨克斯坦连续第29个月增持黄金，塔吉克斯坦也增加了黄金储备。俄罗斯、印度和土耳其3国近年增持的黄金量占所有央行增持黄金的60%。美国仍然是全球持有最多黄金储备的国家，排名前四的国家持有超过全球50%的黄金储备。
相比很多国家，中国黄金占外汇储备比例偏低。金银投资公司董事总经理马克·奥布莱恩指出，中国持有的黄金占其外汇储备总额的比例，远低于10%左右的全球平均水平。根据世界黄金协会(WGC)2014年7月公布的数据，中国目前黄金储备只有1054.1吨，占外汇储备的比重仅为1.6%。而德国是71.7%，美国高达74.7%，连俄罗斯和印度等新兴国家也都在5%以上。2014年第四季墨西哥为2.4%，澳大利亚为5.7%，印度为6.7%，俄罗斯为12.1%。
黄金占比低对中国外汇储备的稳定性有影响。WGC(世界黄金协会)在一份报告中称，中国应该将黄金占外汇储备总额的比例提高至约5%，以帮助分散外汇风险，同时，增持黄金储备将为人民币走向国际化提供砝码，有助于未来黄金定价权的争夺。
自今年3月19日起，中国央行推出新规，对黄金及制品进出口数量进行限制性审批，并施行准许证制度，自2015年4月1日起施行。从4月1日起，在海外拥有资产的国内矿商也将被允许直接进口黄金。相关评论员认为此举旨在国内进一步放开黄金进出口限制，有助于扩大黄金市场，国内金价将下跌，鼓励买黄金，可以为人民币国际化托底。
