由于美国民众对经济前景的看法愈加悲观，美国5月消费者信心指数终值下跌，创去年10月以来最低。
美国家庭目前担忧经济萎缩，同时薪资增长缓慢，而且天然气价格的走高抑制了消费者的收入水平。随着就业市场稳健复苏，对工作保障的要求更多，同时伴随着薪资水平走高，料提振更多的消费和经济增长。
该数据还同时公布了1年期和5-10年期通胀预期。其中，1年期通胀预期为2.8%。5-10年期通胀预期为2.8%。
密歇根消费者信心中的通胀预期，是美联储高度关注的基于调查的通胀数据。
Ameriprise Financial Inc.高级经济学家Russell Price称，从某种程度上来说，消费者仍然比较犹豫。虽然目前美国家庭的财务状况好转，但是在消费支出方面比较保守，不是非常乐观。
Price还补充道，尽管经济增长缓慢，但是经济基本面仍然在改善。这对于消费者来说是一个好消息。
数据还显示，美国5月密歇根大学预期指数终值84.2；美国5月密歇根大学现况指数终值为100.8。
