自1980年起，白银历时20多年的大熊市，银价不断下跌，使得对银矿开采的投入不断减少，从而造成了白银市场供给不足。与此同时，制造业对白银的需求却在逐年增加，具体体现在电工、电子、焊接合金和焊料，首饰、银制品、银币和纪念章等行业的白银耗用量上。
经过近几年来的上涨，银价已扭转了自1980年以来的大熊市。专家预测，如果我国白银市场供不应求的结构性关系不发生根本性的改变，白银牛市至少还将延续十年左右。
据介绍，现货白银99.9最小交易单位是1手(1手为15千克)，Ag(T+D)延期交收交易品种最小交易单位也是1手(1手为1千克)；其中现货Ag99.9只向企业法人开放，而Ag(T+D)延期交收交易品种则可向个人开放。由于Ag99.9和Ag(T+D)均实行保证金交易，保证金比例分别为成交金额的20%和10%。以前要花100%资金做的事，现在只要20%的资金就可以了。
在实物白银上，目前国内发行的银条和银币较少，且大多为纪念性而非投资性，比如奥运银条之类，不是很好的投资品种，而且不如黄金容易变现，流动性较差。
