12月15日，現貨黃金重新走強，由於疫情的持續惡化削弱了疫苗接種帶來的樂觀情緒，加上美國財政刺激計畫取得新進展，而且市場預計美聯儲本周將就擴大購債給出新的指引，讓美元指數有所承壓。
美國步英國後塵，也開始接種新冠疫苗，支撐了風險偏好，但感染人數和死亡率上升削弱了由此帶來的樂觀情緒。倫敦將進入更嚴格的封鎖級別，因發現新冠病毒新變種。
美國醫療保健系統緊張程度到了臨界點，但疫苗向美國公眾廣泛普及還需要幾個月的時間，而且衛生官員警告美國人要對保持社會距離和戴口罩以遏制病毒傳播保持謹慎。
英國衛生大臣漢考克說，已經發現了1000多例新變種，主要在英格蘭東南部。儘管目前尚無跡象表明新菌株可能引起更嚴重的疾病或導致疫苗失效，但漢考克說，這可能有助於提高感染率。
一項9080億美元的兩黨新冠救助計畫將被分成兩部分，這讓人產生了這樣的希望：救助計畫中已經得到兩黨支持的很大一部分至少將獲得批准。其中一項為7480億美元的提案，包括對小企業、失業者和疫苗分發的援助。它將為失業者提供每週300美元的額外福利，為期16周。
另一項1600億美元的提案則存在兩大癥結：對企業的責任保護以及對州和地方政府的保護。民主黨一直在努力向州和地方政府提供援助，以確保不會解雇更多的勞動，包括員警，消防員和緊急醫療人員。但共和黨人普遍對此表示反對。
預計在年內的最後一次政策會議後，美聯儲有望宣佈，預計經濟增長將回升，就業將隨之增加，這兩種觀點都可能反映在新的經濟預測中。但利率點陣圖可能表明，決策者希望在2023年之前繼續維持關鍵隔夜利率在接近零的水準。許多分析師還預計，美聯儲將就維持大規模債券購買計畫多長時間給出新的指引。
如果美聯儲本周就其資產購買計畫發佈新的指導方針，那麼它可能會因此敞開新的大門，部分是為了防止任何市場對明年經濟前景改善的過度反應，從而避免出現美元走強給經濟復蘇帶來新的不利影響。
