由于沙特上周六(1月2日)处决知名什叶派教士尼姆尔，引发沙特驻伊朗大使馆遭到冲击，此事在伊朗和伊拉克引发的示威活动已经持续进入第三天。随后，沙特政府上周日(1月3日)宣布切断了同伊朗的所有关系。
在沙特与伊朗宣布断交后，作为沙特盟国的巴林和苏丹周一(1月4日)也宣布切断了同伊朗的所有关系，阿联酋则调降了与伊朗的外交关系级别。
不过，沙特常驻联合国代表穆阿利米周一表示，会在伊朗停止干涉他国事务时恢复与伊朗的关系，并承诺会继续努力支持推动叙利亚和也门和平进程的努力。
穆阿利米称，“要恢复沙伊关系非常简单，只要伊朗停止并不再干涉包括我们自己在内的他国内政。”
他还表示，“我们并非伊朗与生俱来的天生敌人，如果他们这么做，我们当然会同伊朗有正常的关系。”
穆阿利米称，沙伊两国断交不会影响沙特推动叙利亚及也门和平进程的努力。他指出，“我们会参加接下来的涉叙会谈，不会因为伊朗或其他方面而抵制会谈。”
而另一方面，据俄新社周一援引来自俄罗斯外交部消息人士报道称，俄罗斯愿作为调停方来协助解决伊朗同沙特之间的纠纷。
该消息人士表示，“作为友邦，如果有需要，俄罗斯愿发挥调停作用，以解决这两个国家之间现有、以及任何新出现的矛盾。”
同时，德国周一也呼吁沙特与伊朗进行对话，并呼吁双方使用一切可能选项以改善双边关系。
