4月14日，金價出現巨大漲幅，上漲近2%，刷新近七年半以來的最高位，由於疫情對全球經濟的重創，並引發各國央行出臺大規模經濟刺激計畫，市場紛紛將資金轉入黃金等避險市場。
期貨和現貨價格之間的價差仍然很大，現貨黃金相比COMEX 6月黃金期貨折價超過30美元，由於實物黃金市場受到的干擾，最近幾周以來一直呈現這種折價狀態，這表明市場內流動性稀少，加劇了價格錯位。
有大量避險買盤，目前存在對經濟衰退/蕭條的擔憂，經濟前景看起來相當嚴峻。美聯儲上周剛剛挹注2萬億美元，世界各地的其他央行也在做同樣的事情；利率處於或接近於零，市場擔憂不斷，這為黃金升穿每盎司2000美元創造了一個完美的環境。
國際貨幣基金組織(IMF)週二表示，由於冠狀病毒疫情導致經濟活動停擺，預計2020年全球經濟將萎縮3.0%，這將是1930年代大蕭條以來最嚴重的經濟滑坡。目前全球累計確診病例數已近200萬例，這迫使各國實施停擺措施，並促使央行出臺支持舉措。
美國盡責聯邦預算委員會(CRFB)週一表示，新冠疫情導致美國經濟急劇下滑和政府大規模救助支出，這將使美國2020財年赤字達到原先預估的接近四倍，觸及創紀錄高位3.8萬億美元，相當於美國國內生產總值(GDP)的18.7%。
在金價上漲的同時，全球股市也出現上漲，此前中國公佈的貿易資料好於預期，且一些國家試圖通過部分取消旨在遏制疫情的限制來重啟經濟。
