纸黄金是没有杠杆的，因为从传统的概念上说，实现杠杆式交易的一般都是双边交易市场，如国际现货黄金市场和黄金期货市场，以及国内的黄金T+D交易，这种交易方式即可做空也可做多，而纸黄金是单向的做多机制，而且纸黄金是100%的资金交易，按实际盎司或克数来购买，所以不存在纸黄金的杠杆效应。
目前在中国，只有银行才可以开设纸黄金业务，国内没有一间投资公司在做纸黄金交易。
从纸黄金交易本质上说，它属于实物黄金买卖的范畴，只是买卖的黄金品种不能用于提取和交割，交易对方为纸黄金的发行人。
现时有几家银行推出了纸黄金的双向交易，它是采用如同现货交易一样的保证金交易模式来实现做空，也就是说当纸黄金价格处于下跌状态时，投资者看准时机也能获利。
但纸黄金双向交易没有黄金现货或期货一样的杠杆效应，但当客户的纸黄金账户保证金持仓比例低于50%时，系统将自动预警，暗示要加大仓位了，当低于20%时，则会被强制平仓，以在300元/克的价格时做空黄金为例，若金价上涨50%至450元，系统将发出警告，提醒客户增加保证金；若金价上涨80%至540元时仍未增加保证金，才会被强行平仓。中行的“双向宝”与工行的贵金属双向交易还不太一样。双向宝客户在建仓时需要以1:1.15的比例缴纳保证金，再根据自己对金价走势的判断进行做多或是做空。以进行1000元的黄金交易为例，无论买涨还是买跌，黄金投资者都需要在保证金账户存入至少1150元，如果亏损额达到了15%，交易软件会出现补仓提醒，而如果此时投资者不及时补仓，银行将进行强制平仓。
由于纸黄金交易没有杠杆，风险相对期货和伦敦金而言较低，交易方式也非常灵活，纸黄金双向交易的门槛也较黄金T+D低，以账户黄金双向交易为例，人民币账户黄金双向交易每笔交易起点10克、以1克递增，美元账户黄金每笔交易起点0.1盎司、以0.01盎司递增。
