在贵金属交易中，头肩顶或头肩底是两种十分常见的形态，对未来贵金属价格走势准确性高达95%，它是一个非常理想的交易图形。
头肩型包括三个顶部，（如果是反转头肩型则是三个底部），第二顶比第一和第三顶高，被称为“头”，第一顶和第三顶的高度差不多，被称为“肩”，连接三顶之间低谷的直线被称为颈线。
价格走势形成头肩型完全和市场心态有关，形成第一顶（左肩）是因为空方想逆转走势，暂时把价格推到了一个低点，但是多方又把黄金价格推向了另一个更高的顶（头），接着的多、空拉锯，空方把黄金价格推到之前的低点，多方做最后的努力把价格推到第三顶（右肩），最后空方成功地把价格穿过颈线而形成逆转，此时多方力量已经耗尽，所以头肩型是一个强烈的逆转图型。
一般情形下头、肩都会在20时段简单移动平均线之下，而二个谷在平均移动线之下。
当价格跌破谷底价时就形成了完整的头肩图型，此时价格有95%的机会继续向下形成新低。在头和肩处成交量会比较小，但在右肩形成后，成交量会续渐加大。有二种方法可以利用头肩型进行交易。
传统保守法：传统的头肩型交易法是等图型完整并穿越颈线后才建仓。更保守的交易者甚至会等回调后才交易。止损多会被设在颈线处，所以风险/报酬比会比较理想。
激进交易法：有些激进的交易者会尝试在右肩处建仓，试图抓住整个趋势。在左肩和头形成后，颈线也可以确立，然后在左肩顶画一条和颈线平行的直线来预测右肩。
