时间止损，一般根据个人投资习惯在不能盯盘、或者不能交易的情况下，可以选择平仓。（注意：每天根据行情设立止损，归为技术止损。）比如：短线投资者在休息前，需要平掉所持头寸。又如，经常提醒投资者在国内休市期间，五一、十一、清明等节日，国际市场是有行情波动的，但是中国目前贵金属市场不具备定价权，所以一旦这些节日不能交易，那么节日过后，价格大幅高开或跳水，带给中国投资者的影响将是巨大的，一旦做单方向相反，损失不可想象。
资金止损，机构投资者经常使用资金止损来规避因为操盘手的判断和水平所带来亏损，如一个操盘手可以亏损其所掌握资金的20%，之后机构也许会暂停该操盘手交易。
技术止损，为目前最为常见的操作手段，一般投资者或操盘手会选用均线、趋势线和黄金分割等手段，判断支撑阻力位，然后破位平仓。这种常见的做法，既容易掌握、又十分有效所以普及较广，只是各家对其的说法不一，基本原理则是一样的。
