一、掂轻重
黄金的比重为19.3g/cm3，成色与比重关系较大，比重接近19.3时，含纯金越高。比重18.5时，含金95%，17.8时含金90%，如此类推。只要测出比重便可知首饰的成色，但一般却可掂于手中，若略有沉甸感的就可感知了，因为同样的重量的其它贵金属，如银、铜等重量是不一样的。
二、试软硬
黄金首饰的成色越高越柔软，越无弹性，真金用牙咬或针划都会有轻痕，以手折无断纹，且火烧)后不会变色。成色低的、假的则相反。
三、辨色泽
俗语说，黄金是“七青、八黄、九紫、十赤”，因其含有杂质种类和成份不同而呈现不同的色泽。行家认为，含金七成其首饰呈黄中带青，含金八成呈黄色，含金九成呈黄中透紫，含金十成呈赤色。
四、见音韵
成色高的首饰，掷于水泥地上会有沉闷的叭嗒声，并有声而无韵，无强力，俗称死声。相反，成色低的金饰，抛在水泥地上有韵且声响尖长，并稍有回跳。
五、查看盖印标记法
正规生产厂生产的黄金首饰，都盖含金量和生产厂标记，如盖24K、14K等。
