伦敦金交易是利用资金杠杆原理进行的一种合约式买卖。根据伦敦金保证金合约的交易标准，利用一盎司的价格购买一百盎司的黄金的交易权。利用这100盎司的黄金的交易权在贵金属交易平台进行买涨卖跌，赚取中间的差额利润，这是伦敦金套利的最基本方式。并且如果补充足差价可以提取实物黄金。最低100盎司。
HUI和XAU两种指数的主要区别在于前者由不从事长于一年半时间的对冲交易的公司构成。许多开采商对其黄金产出进行各种方式的避险，而组成HUI指数的成份股公司即便采取避险手段，期限也不超过一年半。因此，在价格上涨趋势中，HUI提供了一个良好的工具跟踪金价的走势，与伦敦金价保持了高度的正相关性。而在价格下跌趋势中，由于没有提供避险保护，HUI的跌势往往甚于XAU。
代表伦敦金指数分别是在美国股票交易所交易的“金甲虫”指数（Gold BUGS Index –HUI）和在费城股票交易所交易的费城金银指数–XAU。
国际黄金指数HUI于196年3月15日上市交易，初始价值定为200，至2013年由世界范围内16家主要的金矿开采公司构成。
国际黄金指数XAU则历史更为悠久，有关XAU的期权在1983年12月开始上市交易，并将1979年的价值水平设为“100点”，至2013年XAU由12家从事贵金属开采的公司组成。
