1919年9月12日上午11点，产生了第一笔黄金定盘，当时金价定在每盎司4磅8先令9便士。开头几天的报价是用电话进行的，后来就决定在斯威辛街的洛西尔银行的办公室里举行正式会议。如今金价一天定盘两次，上午10:30和下午3:00。伦敦黄金定盘价是独一无二的，与其他黄金市场不同，它为市场的交易者买入或卖出黄金只提供单一的报价。它提供的标准价格，被广泛地应用于生产商、消费者和中央银行作为中间价。有5个银行成员参加定盘，每次定价时他们各派一个代表出席。在定盘过程中这些人用电话与其自身的交易员保持联系。
伦敦黄金交易所如何定盘？
在每次定盘开始时，主席（自1919年开始以来，就由洛西尔银行的代表担任，）向其他4位代表宣布一个开盘价，他们分别向本身的交易厅汇报，然后再将这个价格转告给他们的客户。各银行根据他们收到的订单，指示他们的代表宣布他们在该价位上是买进还是卖出。只要在该价格上既有买入又有卖出的，就会询问他们所需交易的金砖数量。如果在该价位上只有买入或只有卖出的，或者买卖金砖的数量不平衡，价格就会上下浮动，于是将上面的程序重新进行一遍，直到得到平衡为止，于是主席宣布定盘。如果买卖的数量在25块以内就宣布定盘，必要时定价过程将持续，直到使买卖双方都满意为止。通常这只需要15分钟或更少的时间，但也有时会超过一小时。客户可以在定价前预先留下订单。也可以在定价的全过程中了解价格的变化，并随时更改订单，直到定盘为止。
