世界上最伟大的交易员有一个有用而简单的交易法则———“鳄鱼原则”。所有成功的交易员在进入市场之前，都要反复训练对这一原则的理解程度。
该法则源于鳄鱼的吞噬方式：猎物越试图挣扎，鳄鱼的收获越多。假定一只鳄鱼咬住你的脚，它咬着你的脚并等待你挣扎。如果你用手臂试图挣脱你的脚，则它的嘴巴便同时咬你的脚与手臂。你越挣扎，便陷得越深。
所以，万一鳄鱼咬住你的脚，务必记住：你惟一的生存机会便是牺牲一只脚。若以市场的语言表达，这项原则就是：当你知道自己犯错误时，立即了结出场！不可再找借口、理由或有所期待，赶紧离场！
“止损 ”就像一把锋利的刀，它使你鲜血淋漓，但它也能使你不伤元气地活下去；它可以不扩大你的亏损，使你化被动为主动，不断寻找新热点。在期货市场上生存，有时需要耐心，有时需要信心，但耐心、信心不代表侥幸，不懂得止损的投资者，就输在侥幸上。侥幸是止损的天敌，止损是投机艺术的基本功。
投资也有止损，但更多的时候叫止盈。投资的止损不同于投机的止损，投机的止损只相对于价格的变化，投资的止损相对于基本面的变化。投资家宣称真正的投资永远都不需要止损是不对的。因为，包括巴菲特这样的大投资家也止损，在哪里止损？在所投资公司失去成长性、基本面恶化时，止损！
