伦敦黄金市场的特点之一是交易制度比较特别，因为伦敦没有实际的交易场所，其交易是通过无形方式——各大金商的销售联络网完成。交易会员由具权威性的五大金商及—些公认为有资格向五大金商购买黄金的公司或商店所组成，然后再由各个加工制造商、中小商店和公司等连锁组成。交易时由金商根据各自的买盘和卖盘，报出买价和卖价。
伦敦黄金市场交易的另一特点是灵活性很强。黄金的纯度、重量等都可以选择，若客户要求在较远的地区交售.金商也会报出运费及保费等，也可按客户要求报出期货价格。最通行的买卖伦敦金的方式是客户可无须现金交收，按伦敦金交易规则即可买入黄金现贷，到期只需按约定利率支付利息即可，但此时客户不能获取实物黄金。这种黄金买卖方式，只是在会计账上进行数字游戏，直到客户进行了相反的操作平仓为止。
伦敦黄金市场特殊的交易体系也有若干不足。首先：由于各个金商报的价格都是实价，有时市场黄金价格比较混乱，连金商也不知道哪个价位的金价是合理的，只好停止报价，伦敦金的买卖便会停止。其二是伦敦市场的客户绝对保密，因此缺乏有效的黄金交易头寸的统计。
