伦敦黄金市场历史悠久，其发展历史可追溯到300多年前。1804年，伦敦取代荷兰阿姆斯特丹成为世界黄金交易的中心，1919年伦敦金市正式成立，每天进行上午和下午的两次黄金定价。由五大金行定出当日的黄金市场价格，该价格一直影响纽约和香港的交易。市场黄金的供应者主要是南非。1982年以前，伦敦黄金市场主要经营黄金现货交易，1982年4月．伦敦期贷黄金市场开业。目前，伦敦仍是世界上最大的黄金市场。
伦敦黄金市场的特点之一是交易制度比较特别，因为伦敦没有实际的交易场所，其交易是通过无形方式–各大金商的销售联络网完成。交易会员由具权威性的五大金商及-些公认为有资格向五大金商购买黄金的公司或商店所组成，然后再由各个加工制造商、中小商店和公司等连锁组成。交易时由金商根据各自的买盘和卖盘，报出买价和卖价。
伦敦黄金市场交易的另一特点是灵活性很强。黄金的纯度、重量等都可以选择，若客户要求在较远的地区交售．金商也会报出运费及保费等，也可按客户要求报出黄金期货价格。最通行的买卖伦敦金的方式是客户可无须现金交收，即可买入黄金现贷，到期只需按约定利率支付利息即可，但此时客户不能获取实物黄金。这种黄金买卖方式，只是在会计账上进行数字游戏，直到客户进行了相反的操作平仓为止。
伦敦黄金市场特殊的交易体系也有若干不足。首先：由于各个金商报的价格都是实价，有时市场黄金价格比较混乱，连金商也不知道哪个价位的国际金价是合理的，只好停止报价，伦敦金的买卖便会停止；其二是伦敦市场的客户绝对保密，市场参与者在确定黄金投资策略上缺乏有效的黄金交易头寸的统计。
