黄金期货合约与远期合约是有所不同的。黄金期货合约，是指在贵金属交易中，买卖双方以国际上的某时点的黄金价格合约为交易标的合约，是双方都必须遵守的；而远期合约一般是根据需要约定而签订的合约，各远期合约的内容在黄金成色等级、交割规则等方面都不相同。那么，除了这个本质上的区别之外，黄金期货合约与远期合约的区别又体现在哪些地方呢？
一、交易场所。远期合约没有固定交易场所，通常在金融机构的柜台或通过电话等通讯工具交易，而期货交易则是在专门的期货交易所内进行的。
二、平仓时间。黄金期货合约的对于收割的时间有规定，因此大都投资者会选择在到期前平仓，而远期合约在一般到期后交割实物或现金交割，平仓的时间根据买卖双方来规定，没有规定的交割时间。
三、交易的对象不同。在期货交易中，交易双方并不直接接触，期货交易所（更确切地说，清算所）充当期货交易的中介，既是买方的卖方，又是卖方的买方，并保证最后的交割，交易所自身则进一步通过保证金等制度设计防止信用风险。
四、合约的转让：期货合约与远期合约不同，当投资者选择转让合约的时候，就可以根据市场的价格买进卖出，但远期合约就比较困难，除非有第三方原因接受合约，否则远期合约是无法自由的进行转让的。
因此，从原理上来看，远期和期货都是黄金投资中本质相同的两种衍生产品，但他们两者的最大区别也就是交易机制的设计有所不同。期货交易是通过交易所内的规定来进行的标准化合约交易，提高了交易的流动性，确保投资者的交易方便和灵活性，从而大大促进了交易的发展。
