据国际货币基金组织(IMF)周二公布的最新数据显示，今年7月俄罗斯共增持近34万盎司黄金储备，总量升至550万盎司(1104公吨)。而一周之前俄罗斯央行曾表示，7月俄罗斯曾增持超过30万盎司黄金储备，基本与IMF数据一致。
然而，值得注意的是，7月哈萨克斯坦央行也增持了4.5万盎司黄金储备，总量升至510万盎司。目前俄罗斯、哈萨克斯坦以及白俄罗斯已组成欧亚关税同盟。欧亚关税同盟可以被视作为欧亚经济联盟的雏形，这三个国家都希望能在2015年完成欧亚经济联盟的建立。鉴于俄罗斯、哈萨克斯坦及白俄罗斯之间密切的合作，这三个国家可能会为建立欧亚经济同盟而协调国家货币政策，包括同步积累官方黄金储备。
据世界黄金协会(WGC)数据显示，今年上半年中俄罗斯已累计增持54公吨黄金储备，而同期哈萨克斯坦也增持了12公吨。
俄罗斯目前是全球第六大黄金储备国，高于瑞士的1040公吨以及中国的1054.1公吨。但重点是，在2009年二季度俄罗斯的黄金储备仅为550公吨，意味着在5年的时间里几乎翻了一倍。
俄罗斯央行持续积累黄金储备可能被视作是分散储备，即“去美元化”的战术策略。同时一个国家的外汇储备包括黄金、美元、欧元以及IMF特别提款权。
一些俄罗斯分析师指出，由于西方的制裁对俄罗斯造成一定威胁，该国增持黄金储备以减少欧元及美元在外汇储备中的比例是一种战术策略，或许也是为“去美元化”做准备。目前黄金占俄罗斯总储备比重超过12%，以这样的步伐来计算，到2014年底比重可能触及15%。
