當地時間14日，英國衛生大臣馬特·漢考稱，一種新變異的新冠病毒正在英格蘭部分地區加速傳播。19日，首相詹森表示，病毒變異後的傳播性，比已存在的病毒毒株高出70%。受此影響，多國相繼宣佈關閉邊境、停飛往返英國航班等措施，應對新冠病毒新變種。

如果沒有脫歐達成協議，英鎊兌美元將跌至1.25左右。對整個協議擁有否決權的歐洲議會警告稱，除非在周日午夜之前提交協議，否則無法在12月31日過渡期結束前及時批准任何協議。另一個自我設定的最後期限來去匆匆，12月31日是真正艱難的最後期限。
脫歐貿易談判定於今天恢復，仍然希望在最後時刻達成一項貿易協議，以避免在當前的新冠肺炎危機之外，進一步造成自身強加的經濟破壞。據報導，歐盟官員正在研究“臨時申請”，如果本月底能達成協議，歐洲議會繼續拒絕投票。即使在最後一刻達成了一項貿易協議，英鎊兌美元的上行潛力也因最近英國出現的新冠肺炎負面進展而受到抑制。可能很難突破1.35，而如果沒有達成協議，就會跌回1.25。
