9月21日，全球股票遭受到大面积抛售，美元出现巨大飙升，由于欧洲疫情重新抬头，欧洲政府重新出台相关封锁措施，金价出现明显下跌，而美元受此影响出现巨大涨幅。
华尔街主要股指周一触及近七周最低，美元指数盘中上涨0.84%，录得3月19日以来最大单日百分比涨幅。分析师称，全球股票市场遭遇抛售，部分原因是市场对冠状病毒病例数增加可能迫使官方重新出台封锁措施的担忧，以及新一轮抗疫纾困财政措施面临不确定性。
分析师表示：“在这些危险时期，黄金不再为投资者提供庇护所。相反，美元走强进一步给商品期货市场带来压力，并使金价回吐涨幅。”
纽约商品交易所12月交割的黄金期货价格下跌51.50美元，跌幅2.6%，收于每盎司1910.6美元，创7月24日以来的最低收盘价；盘中最低下跌至1885.40美元。至此黄金期货价格已跌破其50日移动平均线1941.78美元，这意味着黄金的短期看涨趋势线面临威胁。市场技术分析师通常将50日移动平均线视为短期价格看涨与看跌之间的分水岭。12月白银期货价格下跌2.74美元，跌幅10.1%，收于每盎司24.387美元，创7月31日以来最低收盘价。
金价较8月初触及的纪录高位下跌了近10%，因出台进一步刺激政策的希望变得渺茫。除了已经成为法律的约3万亿美元援助之外，美国国会几周来围绕第五轮救助立法的规模和形式进行的磋商一直未能取得进展。满地可银行基本和贵金属衍生品交易主管Tag Wong称，美国国会在1月前就任何刺激计划达成一致的机率渐近于零。
