在美聯儲傑克遜霍爾年會上的講話中，鮑威爾幾乎沒有提供他認為利率應該走向的指導，他說，美聯儲“將採取適當行動維持經濟擴張”，這句話他最近已經用過好幾次了。
在談到美聯儲的充分就業和物價穩定的雙重使命時，鮑威爾說：“經濟已經接近這兩個目標。我們現在面臨的挑戰是，採取貨幣政策來維持經濟增長，使強勁的就業市場的好處惠及更多仍然落後的人，使通貨膨脹率牢牢地控制在2%左右。”
根據央視新聞報導，國務院關稅稅則委員會決定，自2019年12月15日12時01分起，對原產於美國的汽車及零部件恢復加征25%、5%關稅。

日韓貿易衝突正式爆發以來，兩國各不相讓，上述決定不僅令事態再次升級，也讓衝突從貿易擴展到了軍事領域。
對於全球不斷升級的貿易衝突。印度商工部長戈亞爾22日在新德里表示，一些國家採取的保護主義政策和單邊措施對全球自由貿易產生了不利影響，應針對這些行徑採取相應行動。
經濟學家表示，這意味著今年第三季度美國經濟增長繼續放緩，而製造業企業則受到了經貿緊張局勢和全球經濟減速的影響。接下來的幾個月，美國企業對未來的預期將變得更加悲觀，在投資和員工招聘方面可能會變得更加謹慎。
美聯儲卡普蘭週四稱，預計經濟增長和消費意向強健，下行風險略高，希望可以避免進一步對利率採取行動，需要合適美國經濟的政策。如果不是必須的，希望謹慎降息，若見到疲軟情況持續，對調整持開放態度；不希望美聯儲追隨其他央行降息。這是近期美聯儲第三位美聯儲官員明確反對進一步降息。
