欧元区领导人周二(7月7日)指出，周日将是希腊与债权人达成协议的最后期限，否则他们将会采取前所未有的举措来推动希腊退出欧元区。
在布鲁塞尔举行的欧盟峰会上，希腊反撙节政府被要求在五天内提交新的经济改革方案，以获得另一个援助计划，防止该国陷入经济困境。
“我们已经只剩下几天时间来找到一个解决方案，”德国总理默克尔(Angela Merkel)周二晚间在欧元区领导人会晤之后指出。默克尔表示她对此“不是特别乐观”。
周日现在被视为现代欧洲历史上最重要的日子之一，因欧元区可能会出现潜在的分裂，这将令超过半个世纪的经济和政治一体化进程发生逆转。
“我们对希腊退欧场景有详细的准备，”欧盟委员会主席容克表示。
随着药物短缺将希腊的财政危机转化为一个人道主义危机，而俄罗斯将该国作为其在欧盟内部的潜在的盟友，这使得对希腊终止援助远远超出了狭隘的经济利害关系。
如希腊政府令其援助计划失效，欧洲央行将是唯一站在希腊和经济深渊之间的机构。
自希腊银行7月3日关闭以来，自动柜员机的纸币迅速减少，希腊银行正依赖于欧洲央行提供的紧急贷款来避免崩溃。
“如果我们不能达成协议，这可能会导致希腊以及希腊银行系统的破产，”欧盟理事会主席图斯克指出，“如果有人对希腊不会破产还抱有任何幻想，那他们真的是太天真了。”
