IMF发言人Gerry Rice在一份声明中证实，希腊政府未能在截止日前偿还欠款。该国违约债务正值希腊反紧缩政府和其债权人处于对峙局面之际，这种情况已将该国推向金融崩溃和潜在退出欧元区的边缘。
Rice表示，IMF已通知其执行董事会希腊正式处于违约状态，在还清欠款后才能再次获得IMF的资金。该组织表示，希腊所提延长原订周二到期的还款期限的请求，将在适当时机交由IMF的执行董事会表决。
从技术层面来说，IMF的董事中若有70%同意这项请求，IMF便能允许该国延后还款。不过，这家借款机构已表明，自1982年以来便不曾同意过此类延期，这次也不太可能对希腊破例。
希腊总理齐普拉斯向欧洲稳定机制（ESM）提出了两年的延长救助申请，以支付未来两年希腊所有的财政需求，包括债务重组计划。根据该提议，希腊希望新的援助计划帮助其支付2015-2017年间到期的291.5亿欧元的债务。这份由齐普拉斯签署的提案还要求延期现有的2450亿欧元的救援方案。但是，延伸和债务重组的要求遭到了欧元区财长的拒绝。
