据CNBC调查，在过去的三十年中，第一季度经济总是四个季度中表现最弱的。当整体经济平均增长2.7%时，第一季度平均仅增长1.87%。CNBC采访的一些经济学家指出，如果适当地对数据中的季节性变量作出调整，那么这样的一个现象就不会连续出现三十年。同时，他们认为CNBC的分析结果具有统计显著性。
费城联邦储备银行实时数据研究中心经理斯塔克(Tom Stark)指出，历年第一季度GDP表现的确处于四个季度中的最低水平。他指出，从统计学角度来看，由于选择了大量的样本，这些结果似乎相当可靠。
GDP历年来经历过多次修改，因此它似乎无法完美地反应经济水平。季节性因素仅在个别类别的数据中被调整，而整体数据却没有作出调整。这可能是由于发生在第一季度的一些事件有一定的规律性，例如，十分恶劣的天气、国防或企业支出下降，但是其规律并不是十分固定以至于有足够理由对数据作季节性调整。
