就在美联储官员为定于下周召开的政策会议做准备、考虑自金融危机爆发之前以来首次加息的时点之时，强势美元以及不稳定的全球经济正在成为他们的首要关切。
美联储已经表示不太可能在下周加息，并且官员们在最近接受采访以及公开表态时也暗示，由于第一季度经济放缓，6月份加息的可能性已经降低。
在讨论下半年的前景时，官员们也在越来越多地考虑强势美元可能会给他们的经济预期前景带来多大影响。美联储官员们的目标是年经济增长率2.5%左右，通胀率逐步上升，并且失业率继续下降。
美联储官员们曾表示，除非他们确信通胀率在向他们设定的2%目标回升的道路上，否则他们不会加息，并且也希望看到就业市场持续改善。美元升值会使出口商品显得昂贵，因而不利于出口，进而会拖累经济及就业。与此同时，强势美元会压低进口商品价格及总体通胀水平。
波士顿联邦储备银行行长罗森格伦(Eric Rosengren)周一接受《华尔街日报》(The Wall Street Journal)采访时表示，美元的走强以及全球经济增长的不平衡已经成为美联储展望中一个越来越重要的部分。
从去年开始美联储官员不断暗示，预计将在2015年启动加息，因为他们预计美国经济将继续增强。于是，预计美联储加息的投资者们把资金投向美元资产，以追求更高的回报率，但这推高了美元汇率，在一定程度上造成了经济增长放缓。
美元自去年7月以来的升值速度已经超过了上世纪90年代末科技繁荣时期的美元上涨步伐，当时，美国经济遥遥领先，而亚洲新兴市场经济体和俄罗斯受到了金融危机的困扰。在今年3月份美联储会议过后，美元有所企稳，决策者们在会议上下调了未来三年的利率预期。但美联储官员认为，美元攀升带来的影响仍将影响美国经济。
自1月份以来，接受《华尔街日报》调查的经济学家已将今年美国经济增长预期从3%下调至2.7%，部分理由是美元升值对经济不利。他们还将今年的通胀率预期从1.6%下调至1.3%。其他一些因素也在改变经济前景。油价大跌导致油气开采量减少。短期来看，这将损害投资，但汽油价格下跌可能会在晚些时候提振消费者开支。
