在现货黄金投资交易市场中，我们经常在报纸、或网络上查看关于当日现货黄金行情的新闻或评论稿时，会看到“黄金多头”，“黄金空头”这些字眼，这些字眼是作为炒黄金入门阶段的人士必须掌握的概念，下面我们看一下多头和空头头寸的含义是什么。
首先我们理解下头寸这个词，头寸这一词不仅是运用在黄金投资交易市场之中，还广泛地运用在股债市场以及汇市，从狭义上来说，它是指我们选择某一种交易标的物的建立仓位，即建立一手仓位所需的资金量，可以简单地理解成，它是交易市场中每手交易单的统称，以黄金为例，投资者根据自身的黄金投资理财策略入市，他必然首先做出买入或卖出的不同选择，买入又称为做多，因此，建立一手做多的交易单，这手交易单就称之为多头头寸，而交易手数越大，头寸也就越大，同理，建立一手做空的交易单，这手交易单就称之为空头头寸。
以现货黄金为例，在同一时间单位内，全球所有的多头头寸和空头头寸相加，就是整个现货黄金交易市场的资金成交量。头寸的货币单位通常用美元表示，交易单位为手。
由于现货黄金具有杆杠保证金双向交易的特性，所以我们无论是建立现货黄金多头或是空头头寸的时候，其头寸的资金量是借所在的贵金属平台的给予的剩余资金来建仓的，个人的保证金只是占有较小的比例，这个要按每个贵金属投资机构所设定的杠杆交易比例设定，一般杠杆比例越高，保证金占本金的比例就越低，资金利用率则越高。
我们也看到新闻中出现“净多头”或者“净空头”的字眼，这些概念不属于现货交易范畴，只存在期货交易当中，净头寸的意思是，未平仓的多头合约或空头合约，由于现货交易是即日交易即日平仓，所以没有合同期限的制约，根据黄金期货特点，交易合约在交割期到来之前，投资者都可以任意建立头寸，而到期日结束日之前，必须要进行标准化合约交割，相比起现货黄金，黄金期货需支付一定的交割费用，因此不具投入成本低的优势。
