相反理论的主要观点就是在实际操作中要关注多数投资者对市场的判断，并在极端的情况下采取同绝对多数相反的意见。该理论认为当所有人都看好后市时极有可能就是顶部的开始，应当考虑卖出;当人人悲观恐慌时则意味者趋势已经见底，此时要做好随时进场的准备。相反理论有助于判断未来行情演变，但是需要注意，这里的相反，不是绝对意义上的相反，而是需要多方因素的支持形成相反的大局。
实际上相反理论对市场分析的论据十分简单。如果市场中每一位投资者都看好后市，大家都有这个共识的时候就都会采取买入的策略，在这种情况下，买方力量就会消耗殆尽，由于想买入的人都已经完成了买入的操作，则继续做多的资金就会面临无以为继的局面，牛市因此也就会在绝大多数人的看好氛围中走向完结，市场行情开始由牛转熊。同样，若市场一片萧条，假如每一位投资者都认为后市还有下跌空间的话，那么所有看空的人都将采取卖出的行动。在绝大多数投资者表示对后市悲观时，实际上所有看淡的人都已经清空了自己的仓位，而此时虽然场内十分低迷，但很可能已经没有了任何抛压。在缺乏做空动力的情况下，市价基本上就处于谷底位置。这时不仅不应跟风卖出，反而应当考虑买入。
