黄金市场中期的走势方向一般受到市场上某一焦点事件的发展所决定。同时，伴随黄金价格的变化，市场也不断地寻找新的焦点事件作为炒作材料。例如黄金2005年的价格走势，当时朝鲜与伊朗核问题令国际局势相当紧张，这促使黄金价格在在一个月的时间内从410美元上升至447美元的高位。之后随着美国的态度转软，局势有所缓和，适逢当时美联储议息会议强调通货膨胀压力恶化风险，使市场的焦点转到美元息口走向上，黄金价格开始从447美元滑落。同年3月底4月初，市场对美国经济衰退的忧虑逐渐占据了市场的主导，黄金价格突围上扬至437美元。
2005年5月，美国经济数据强劲，市场对经济衰退的担忧情绪一扫而空，黄金价格再度从437美元滑落。2005年5月中旬之后，市场目光转向欧盟宪法公投，在公投失利引发欧洲政治危机的情况下，欧元拾级下跌，同时黄金价格亦创出413美元的年内第二低点。
由上面的例子我们可以看出，黄金市场的关注焦点在不断地转换，黄金价格在相应时段确认方向性的走势，当然，市场焦点是在不知不觉中转换的，无法定出一个明确的时间分界线，热衷炒黄金的人只能通过市场信息来做判断，需结合技术面分析走势。
