風險情緒惡化，美元飙升商品貨幣大跌
周二(8月17日)美元指數一度上漲0.6％，為8月6日以來最大漲幅，在美國經濟數據顯示出複蘇不均衡之後，美元兌所有主要發達市場和新興市場貨幣受月中的投資再平衡資金流動的影響都延續了漲勢。現貨黃金回吐了早前漲勢，因美元走強，此前美國喜憂參半的經濟數據說明經濟複蘇不平衡。油價連續第四個交易日下跌，美油跌超1%，因日本新冠確診病例數激增，亞洲需求疲軟，且石油輸出國組織(OPEC)及其盟友認為市場不需要更多原油。
鮑威爾強調美聯儲獨立性
美聯儲主席鮑威爾表示，美聯儲在貨幣政策決策方面具有獨立性。美聯儲堅持現有職能具有重要意義。美聯儲那些“強有力的政策工具”存在諸多局限性。相比之下，財政或政府政策更加有力；貨幣政策無法帶來定向的好處。我們不會簡單地重返新冠肺炎流行病疫情之前的經濟狀態。新冠疫情可能伴隨美國一段時間。尚不確定德爾塔變異毒株是否會對美國造成嚴重的經濟影響。美國可能會繼續實施遠程辦公方案，那將改變工作場所。公衆互動和服務類就業崗位的複蘇速度更慢。
美聯儲官員談及高通脹率
美聯儲卡什卡利：即使7月就業報告強勁，仍有600-800萬美國人沒有工作。我認為高通脹數據是暫時的。如有需要，美聯儲將提高利率以對抗通貨膨脹。仍認為就業市場“非常疲軟”，不擔心政府以低利率借貸來資助長期投資，政府在利率極低的情況下支出是有價值的，對經濟來說過多的債務會導致通脹，但這應該體現在政府借款的利率上，而現在看不到。
美國7月零售銷售額環比下降1.1% 降幅超出預期
美國商務部當地時間17日公布數據顯示，7月美國零售銷售額環比下降1.1%，降幅超過市場普遍預期的0.3%。美媒分析認為，隨著德爾塔變異毒株快速傳播引起疫情反彈將導致第三季度旅遊、娛樂業等服務行業消費下降。同時，食品、服裝、洗護用品價格的上漲也將在一定程度上影響對這些産品的消費。
