在贵金属递延交易中，保证金是指贵金属交易的当事人在买卖贵金属合约的时候，只向贵金属交易公司交付一定的保证金，来进行的贵金属递延交易。因此，该交易具体分为贵金属买进和贵金属卖出两种。其中，交易者买入贵金属现货合约为”买空”，卖出贵金属现货合约为”卖空”。
1、保证金举例说明
以房屋买卖为例，投资者在买入总价值100万房屋的时候，你先以10万作为房屋的首付金额，然后如果你的房屋上涨了1万元，这时你把房屋的合约权卖给了别人，就相当于你只用了10万元来交易这100万的房屋，而这首付的10万元就是保证金。
在贵金属递延交易中，普通情况下，保证金可以视作押金，只需要先付一定的押金，就可以拥有商品的交易权，而押金的占有比例就是杠杆比例。比如现时的交易比例为1:100，买入1手为1000美元/盎司的现货黄金，你就只需要交付10美元即可（1000/100=10美元）进行价值1000美元的黄金投资交易。
2、保证金的好处
（1）客户能够超出自身所拥有的资金力量进行大宗的交易
当客户预测到贵金属交易的价格将要上涨，希望买进一定数量但手头却无足够的资金；或者预测到贵金属交易的价格将下跌，希望抛售可手中又恰好没有资金的时候，很显然如采用一般的交易方式，这时无法进行任何交易。而保证金交易的好处就在于当客户资金不足时，可以客户手上仅有的资金来进行放大倍数的交易。通过这些方式满足了客户的需要，使之得以超出自身的资金力量进行大额的贵金属投资交易，市场亦更加活跃。
（2）具有较大的杠杆作用。
例如，投资者手上仅有1000美元的资金，苦于投资无门，又想进行贵金属交易的时候。你就可以利用这1000美元的资金，以1:100的杠杆比例进行交易，假设现时的现货黄金价位为1200美元，你就只需要支付12美元即可，相当于以你总金额的1:100资金来进行100倍的现货黄金交易，较大的杠杆作用能充分使你的资金扩大收益。
当然，贵金属递延保证金交易是一把双刃剑，投资者如果将套期保值数量盲目地投机性放大，一旦决策失误，会招致个人的重大亏损甚至破产。
