美債收益率會衰退嗎？看加拿大收益率曲線

市場試圖判斷美債收益率曲線倒掛來預測經濟衰退是否會到來，可以從加拿大債市找到線索。上周加拿大國債收益率曲線也出現了倒掛，雖然加拿大經濟規模只有美國的十分之一，但因為全球貿易局勢警長導致全球經濟增長放緩，會讓加拿大經濟受阻。
上周美國10年期國債收益率跌到比三個月國庫券收益率還低的水準，曲線倒掛的情況為逾10年來首見。
過去50年，美國每次經濟衰退前都出現了收益率曲線倒掛，不過部分市場人士並不把此次倒掛的嚴重性放在眼裏。他們認為全球金融危機過後，美聯儲購買了數萬億美元國債，籍此壓低長期利率，收益率曲線已遭扭曲。
上周加拿大國債收益率曲線也出現倒掛，或許可以成為替代性指引，即使加拿大經濟規模僅有美國的十分之一。
加拿大長債發行規模不及美國，這一部分的曲線變化取決於各個省份。儘管其市場並未直接受到央行購債影響，但經濟卻是與美國息息相關，加拿大很少在美國經濟不下滑的情況下出現衰退。
加拿大帝國商業銀行(CIBC)資產管理全球固定收益副總裁Patrick O’Toole表示，我認為這兩者倒掛均是真正的警訊，債市預期未來幾個季度內會出現衰退。加拿大市場發出的信號要比美國更明確，因為加拿大央行並未干預市場。
加拿大在過去50年中曾有過五次衰退，即至少連續兩季出現經濟萎縮。除了2015年那次的例外，其餘都是和美國一起衰退，2015年那年油價發生崩跌。
加拿大國債收益率較美債收益率低98個基點，貨幣市場本月從預計加拿大央行進一步加息，轉變為預計年內降息一次的可能性約為75%。自2017年7月以來，加拿大央行累計加息125個基點至1.75%。
在加拿大，收益率曲線倒掛並不一定預示著經濟衰退。但確實會導致金融條件收緊，因為它會削弱銀行放貸意願，打壓投資者對能夠提振經濟增長的長期專案的興趣。
分析師稱，人們對收益率曲線倒掛不屑一顧，但如果倒掛持續或進一步加深，緊縮將令經濟增長承壓，並且它本身將成為一個自我實現的過程。我總是對債券市場搞錯了的看法持謹慎態度。
